Sokoban: instructions and practice

Bring your attention to one round of Sokoban. Push every crate onto a target. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Take a closer look while playing

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Make the next step deliberately.

The purpose of your moves

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

From the start of a round

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

How to use the controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

Try this example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Verify the rule before continuing.

Check this before moving on

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
