Learn the rules of 15 Puzzle

Start 15 Puzzle by looking at the playing area and its controls. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Use the example below to understand a decision. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Practice with a purpose

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

The objective of a round

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

The steps to play

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Keyboard and screen controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

An example to follow

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

A common point of confusion

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
